my portrait at an event

My name is Hitomi. I am a Seattle based photographer and graphic designer. I lived in Japan for most of my life before moving to Seattle. I shoot events and portraits with my husband. To see our work, check out Joel Dames Photography.

My passion for photography began when I discovered the microscopic world of plants. I enjoy capturing tiny universes within nature. Gradually, I also became interested in shooting insects. From that point, I started to like shooting flying or moving subjects. Surprisingly, this made me less afraid of birds. 😀

My event photography debut happened when my friend, David Lasky,  asked my husband to shoot his comic class at 826 Seattle. I took my husband place, because he wasn’t available on that day.   I never used to shoot with flash back then,  so I quickly learned how from my husband. Everyone seemed to be satisfied with images I shot, so I began to join my husband–first as his assistant, and then as his partner–for other events like weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, etc.

I am very happy to meet animals whenever I shoot events or portraits or whatever. I’m not fond of reptiles though. 😀

My other interests are violin, aikido and watching movies.
